Canyon Lake Fly Fishing

Canyon Lake is a reservoir formed by The Guadalupe River in Comal County, Texas near the towns of Canyon Lake and New Braunfels. Construction on Canyon Dam began in 1958, completed in 1964 and filled to its conservation level of 909 msl in 1968. Releases from the dam provide the cold water necessary to sustain the southernmost Trout fishery in the United States on The Guadalupe River. Canyon Lake is known as the “Jewel of The Texas Hill Country” and for good reason. Its clear waters can be a tough code to crack but provide some of the most exciting fly fishing around here. Striped Bass are our favorite species to target and we’ve caught them over 30lb fly fishing in Canyon Lake. Elusive for many fly anglers around here yet downright aggressive using the right techniques, nothing in the Texas Hill Country pulls line like a Striper. A school of Stripers in a surface feeding frenzy is an awesome sight to see and casting flies to them is a lot of fun.
On Canyon Lake, our best topwater action starts in the Fall, lasts throughout the Winter and Spring into the early Summer. Stripers are a temperate water species that typically prefer water temperatures in the 55-69 degree range. When they aren’t keyed on the surface, we locate Stripers feeding deeper which can be my favorite way to catch bigger fish. Fishing is excellent year round although our tactics change. Canyon Lake also provides great action for Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass which can be very dependable throughout the year. There are opportunities for sight casting Carp and Gar in the warmer months too. We also have a great White Bass run in the spring.
We specialize in fly fishing but enjoy using light tackle and artificial lures too. We promote catch and release but clients are welcome to keep some Striped and White Bass for the table. We provide all equipment, rods, flies, lures, cooler with water on all trips and lunch on full day trips. We are proud to offer our clients top of the line equipment from Scott, TFO, Abel, Hatch, Sage, G Loomis, Hardy, Sage, Orvis, Simms, Scientific Anglers, Rio Products and others.
